Why 1. 98. 4 was the best year ever for popcorn cinema. Imagine a summer when you could have seen Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Beverly Hills Cop, The Karate Kid, Romancing the Stone and The Neverending Story, and still had A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Terminator to look forward to. One iconic film a fortnight. This was 1. 98. 4: arguably the greatest year for popcorn cinema in Hollywood history. Doomsaying in the industry is rife – no film this summer has yet broken $1. Yes, we’ve reached the point where even the $9. Transformers: Age of Extinction, the biggest opener, is considered a disappointment, though Paramount’s official tracking pushed this just over the 1. From this purely commercial standpoint, it has lacked the whopping first- weekend clout of an Iron Man 3 ($1. Avengers ($2. 07m) or a Dark Knight Rises ($1. Like those, three of the five highest- grossing films this year are superhero sequels – X- Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider- Man 2, and (at No. Captain America: The Winter Soldier. None of these, though, has ignited into the kind of bums- on- seats phenomenon the studios need to keep business annually buoyant. Where did the joy go, in our summer movie outings? And how was it, exactly 3. It smashed all previous records, and remained a freakishly successful season which wouldn’t be topped for some years. For the first time, four films grossed more than $1. Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters) soared past the $2. Gremlins) scored $1. Blockbuster comedies with a serious yuck factor? Martial arts for the family market? Eddie Murphy versus Bill Murray vs Harrison Ford? Not a caped crusader among them. As film after film opened way beyond expectations and captured the public imagination, it must have been obvious there was something in the air. Only one (Temple of Doom) was itself a sequel. Perhaps most remarkable, and most galling by comparison with our Marvel- stuffed era, is how many of them were wholly original in their conception – scripts dreamed up the old- fashioned way. This goes hand in hand with a parallel narrative about the steep decline of “auteur- driven”, bad- boy cinema which had distinguished the Seventies, and the scapegoating of expensive, non- populist auteur flops such as Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1. Scorsese’s New York, New York (1. Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate (1. Coppola’s One from the Heart (1. The studios weren’t interested in reaching a strictly adult fan- base any more. They’d switched their sights to the teenage market, and found, in Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, two creative wizards whose films were practically a manifesto in access- all- areas populism, bringing in young and old. Spielberg didn’t just direct Temple of Doom but executive- produced Gremlins, and fought Joe Dante’s corner in every battle with Warner Bros. He’s rumoured to have sent this memo, when executives were battling to take the weirder edges off Dante’s gleefully anarchic vision: “Well, we could cut all the Gremlins out and call it . How would you like that?”. Ghostbusters depended on the kind of special effects Spielberg had already shown could lure audiences in, especially when he made a hit of Poltergeist two years earlier. READ: Christopher Nolan on the future of Hollywood Beverly Hills Cop, an unanticipated smash phenomenon, put Eddie Murphy over the top as an A- List star. He’d already had substantial hits with his debut 4. Hrs (1. 98. 2) and John Landis’s Trading Places (1. It was the right film at the right time in his meteoric ascent to fame – not until the Shrek franchise would he regain anything like the same box- office clout. The film’s real secret was a pair of producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, who would even overtake Spielberg and Lucas as the shameless architects of the modern blockbuster era, making many, many formulaic action- comedies of the exact same ilk, while presumably keeping then- whippersnapper Michael Bay on a diet of steroids, biding his time. It depended pretty obviously, in both plot and marketing terms, on comparisons to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which makes it surprising it wasn’t completely shunted out of the marketplace when that film’s wildly successful sequel opened in late May. And by making Kathleen Turner’s romance novelist, not Michael Douglas’s jungle adventurer, the focal character, Zemeckis savvily gave his film more female appeal at the box office. Perhaps Hollywood had enough distance from both the hits and train- wrecks of recent years, and enough of a pool of emerging talent like Dante, Zemeckis, James Cameron and Wes Craven, that it became the natural moment for a renaissance, of sorts, a recalibration of what summer entertainment would mean for the next generation. From Mr Miyagi to the Stay- Puft Marshmallow Man, Atreyu to Gizmo, Joan Wilder to Sarah Connor, Axel Foley to Freddie Krueger to Short Round, these films and characters have an impressive claim on what you might call popcorn memory. Now try naming a single character, except the one in the title, from the spectacular but fundamentally impersonal Godzilla (2. You may start to feel a little nostalgic.
